Rechtbank veroordeelt Corbis tot betalen forse schadevergoedingen
The US District Court for the Southern District of New York has hit stock photo agency Corbis with two separate orders to compensate photographers for lost images in recent weeks. Photographer Arthur Grace won a $667,685 judgment on January 30 for the loss of 45,000 images, while photographer Chris Usher was awarded $157,121 February 29 for the loss of 12,640 of his images.
In both cases, the awards were the court’s estimates of income the images would have generated had they not been lost. That method of valuation differs from many other lost slide cases, which have based damages on estimates of the dollar value of the lost images.
In the Arthur Grace case, the court revised a 2005 ruling in which it had set damages at $472,000. Grace covered major news events, politics, sports and celebrities during the 70s, 80s and 90s. He submitted the images for worldwide distribution through Sygma, the French news photo agency acquired by Corbis in 1999.
In 2001, Grace quit the agency and asked for the return of his images. Although Corbis returned many images, it was unable to account for thousands more, so Grace sued for damages in 2002.
The same court ruled in November that sloppy record keeping caused Corbis to lose 12,640 transparencies belonging to photographer Chris Usher. In late February, the court set damages at $100,000 for lost income—both past and future—plus $57,000 interest on income lost in the past.
Corbis recruited Usher in the spring of 2000, when he was covering major news and political events as a freelancer for various magazines. He left the agency in November 2001, dissatisfied with the agency’s performance. He asked the agency to return his images when he left, but Corbis was unable to locate about 25 percent of them.
The court instructed Usher to calculate his average monthly earnings while at Corbis, and then multiply that figure by 25 percent. He then had to extrapolate that product over a 30 year period to arrive at the estimated total income he would have generated from the lost images. It was on that basis that the court arrived at the $100,000 judgment, plus interest.

Philip Jones Griffiths, a British photojournalist widely known for his coverage of the Vietnam war, has been awarded the “For Peace and Friendship among Peoples” insignia, the highest distinction of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations.
Many Vietnamese respected Philip Jones Griffiths and his career, who died of cancer on March 18 at the age of 72 in Britain as reported by the Magnum agency. Philip Jones Griffiths’s documents and photos about Vietnam and Cambodia, especially Agent Orange victims, helped raise the world public’s awareness about AO.
Between 1966 and 1971, Jones Griffiths covered the war in Vietnam and published a photo book, entitled “Vietnam Inc”, telling about civilians’ pains and losses, which helped change the US public opinions about the war. Embedded bij de andere kant?
Er is de laatste maanden en jaren veel discussie geweest over de vraag of het wel of niet kies is om als (foto-)journalist embedded bij een legereenheid te werken.
Dan rijst wel de vraag: zijn er eigenlijk ook fotografen "embedded" bij de andere strijdende partijen? (Om woorden als 'opstandelingen', 'vrijheidsstrijders' en 'terroristen' maar even terzijde te laten).
Vandaag stel ik die kwestie maar weer eens aan de orde, naar aanleiding van foto's die AFP-fotograaf Essam al-Sudani via zijn persbureau heeft gepubliceerd.
Uit die foto's blijkt dat Essam al-Sudani optrekt met strijders van de Sjiitische Mahdi-militie in Basra, die hij bijvoorbeeld fotografeert op het moment dat zij een bermbom plaatsen. Ik krijg toch een ongemakkelijk gevoel bij deze en andere foto's van de genoemde AFP-fotograaf.

Tiger Woods wil fotografen aanvliegen
Topgolfer Tiger Woods wordt gek van al het geklik op het moment dat hij klaar staat om een bal over de green te slaan. Woods barstte vorige week al in woede uit, toen een fotograaf hem uit zijn concentratie haalde.
Woods won sinds september vorig jaar acht toernooien op rij. Vorige week werd zijn zegereeks gestopt. Woods begon dramatisch aan een toernooi maar leek op de laatste dag een inhaalslag te maken. Bij een afslag raakte de Amerikaanse golfer echter afgeleid, naar zijn zeggen door het geklik van een fotograaf. Woods werd furieus en dreigde de eerste de beste fotograaf die hem stoorde, lichamelijk te molesteren. Woods eindigde uiteindelijk op de vijfde plaats.

‘Schieten met scherp - fotografie in conflictgebieden’
Van 11 april t/m 26 mei is in Perscentrum Nieuwspoort (Den Haag) de fototentoonstelling ‘Schieten met scherp - fotografie in conflictgebieden’ te zien.
De expositie (bestaande uit 20 foto's) zal op dinsdag 15 april a.s. in Nieuwspoort officieel worden geopend door de Commandant der Strijdkrachten, generaal Dick Berlijn. Hij zal in een lezing terugblikken op de relatie tussen de media en de krijgsmacht gedurende zijn periode als CDS. Na deze toespraak is er gelegenheid tot het stellen van vragen. De bijeenkomst wordt geleid door de heer Pieter Broertjes, hoofdredacteur van de Volkskrant.

NPPA Best Of Photojournalism
On the third full day of judging at NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism competition at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, judges picked winners in the categories Domestic News Picture Story, International News, General News, Enterprise, Natural Disaster, and Environmental Picture Story.
In the International News category, first place is John Moore of Getty Images for his photograph from the assassination of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Second place is Carlos Barria of Reuters, and third place is Paul Bronstein of Getty Images.
In the Domestic News Picture Story category, first place is Todd Heisler of The New York Times for an essay on the aftermath of the Virginia Tech campus shootings. Second place is Mark Zaleski of The Press-Enterprise for a picture story on children visiting their parents in California prisons, and third place is Barbara Davidson of the Los Angeles Times for a story about a woman left paralyzed by a gang bullet who is raising her three young children.

Vijf jaar fotografieaankopen op Universiteit van Tilburg
Bij de aanschaf van kunstwerken legt de Universiteit van Tilburg zich sinds 2003 toe op de opbouw van een collectie hedendaagse fotografie. Tot 14 mei zijn rond de aula van de UvT circa veertig fotokunstwerken te zien die de afgelopen vijf jaar zijn verworven. Daaronder werken van Jan Dibbets, Martin Parr, Inez van Lamsweerde en Erwin Olaf.
De tentoonstelling is te zien op werkdagen tot 18.00.

Het Uur van de Wolf over de omstreden foto's van Sally Mann

In de NPS bijdrage van Het Uur van de Wolf vertelt "De omstreden foto’s van Sally Mann" het verhaal van de eigenzinnige en spraakmakende fotografe Sally Mann (1951, Lexington, Virginia, VS). Ze zoekt haar onderwerpen bewust dicht bij huis, fotografeert waar ze van houdt en wat haar bezig houdt. In 1992 breekt ze door met een expositie van een serie zwart-wit foto’s van haar kinderen: Immediate Family. Omdat haar kinderen er vaak naakt op staan, rijst in Amerika de vraag of dit kunst is of kinderporno. Mann ontketent zo onbedoeld een discussie die haar werk meteen beroemd maakt. Met haar esthetische benadering van controversiële onderwerpen roept ze vaker discussies over kunstzinnigheid en ethiek. Deze documentaire belicht op intieme wijze haar werkproces en de ontwikkeling van Sally Mann over tien jaar en betrekt daarin, zoals zij dat ook doet in haar foto’s, haar leefomgeving, haar onzekerheden en haar familie. Haar man en jeugdliefde Larry lijdt aan een dodelijke spierziekte en ze probeert via haar fotografie vat te krijgen op de dood en ontbindingsprocessen. Ze graaft daarvoor niet alleen de botten op van haar overleden honden, maar fotografeert ook lijken in een forensische laboratoriumtuin. De fotoserie wordt een oogverblindende en persoonlijke meditatie over sterfelijkheid.

The Magnum Workshop Toronto
May 5th – 9th, 2008 Toronto, Canada
The Magnum Workshop Toronto is a five day intensive, practice oriented workshop that seeks to provide personal photographic growth in an intimate and intensive environment. Each of the 6 five-day workshops will be led by an accomplished Magnum Photographer, each with their distinctive style and approach to photography.
Students will select one of the following Magnum photographers as a workshop leader: Christopher Anderson, Chien-Chi Chang, Bruce Gilden, David Hurn, Alessandra Sanguinetti and Larry Towell.
The workshops will take place at the 381 Projects, a modern building designed by a leading Toronto based architect. Each facility will be fully equipped with wifi, a computer workstation, projectors and printers.
Participants will produce individual projects under the same constraints as a professional assignment, but with daily review and editing sessions within their groups. Focusing on story formation, visual literacy, and personal vision, these intimate, intensive masterclasses form the center of the Toronto Workshop. Prior to the workshop, each accepted applicant will be sent specific directives from their selected workshop leader.
As part of the workshops, students will participate in an exhibition produced by HP, featuring work produced over the week. Printed on HP’s large format inkjet printers, with state of the art print quality and color consistency, the work will be shown in a group exhibition and attended by photographic industry professionals during the CONTACT festival.
The Magnum Workshop Toronto is aimed at photographers who are dedicated to pushing their own personal photographic boundaries. This includes both professional and amateur photographers, but requires participants to arrive ready to work and to take their photography to a new level. This is not a workshop designed for beginning photographers, and students are required to submit samples of their work for review before being accepted. Due to high interest, there will be a multi-tiered admission process. The first deadline for acceptance is April 10th, and qualified applicants will be selected through a combination of the merit of their work and their personal statement, and the order of their application’s receipt. All applications received after April 15th will be reviewed space permitting. Due to the fast pace of the week, participants are expected to arrive prepared to produce and edit their projects digitally. Students must bring their own digital cameras. For those Students who would like to shoot film, they may do so but must have all film developed at their own cost and on the required deadlines.
Tuition: $1500 USD (does not include travel, accommodations or on the ground expenses) All fees must be paid upon acceptance. Refund policies will be emailed with acceptance emails.
Accomodations: Magnum will provide a list of lodging options upon request. All participants will receive a full welcome package before arrival including logistical details on the ground as well as a discount at Magnum’s bookstore.

Russische 'dissident' Rost in Haags Fotomuseum
In het Fotomuseum in Den Haag is vanaf vrijdag een expositie te zien van de Russische fotograaf en journalist Joeri Rost. In het huidige Rusland belichaamt Rost (1939) de dissidente pers van de jaren '70 en '80, zo stelde een woordvoerder van het museum dinsdag.
Het Fotomuseum stelt een serie portretten uit de periode 1946-1997 tentoon, waarop boeren, zwervers, academici en acteurs staan afgebeeld. Bij elke foto legt Rost in een korte tekst uit wat hem zo aanspreekt in de geportretteerde.
Het werk van Rost is nauw verwant met dat van fotografen als Henri Cartier-Bresson, Leonard Freed en Ed van der Elsken.

World Press Photo zoekt projectmanager
De Stichting World Press Photo is per 1 juni op zoek naar een Medior Projectmanager op de afdeling Educatie. Het betreft een contract voor 1 jaar op basis van 32 uur per week.
Van de projectmanager wordt het volgende verwacht:
-Ondersteuning bij de ontwikkeling van nieuwe projectvoorstellen ten bate van mediaorganisaties en fotojournalisten in het Zuiden.
-Is mede verantwoordelijk voor het organiseren van educatieve projecten en bewaakt daarbij de planning en het budget.
-Ondersteuning bij de inzameling van rapportages van de partners uit het Zuiden.
-Is verantwoordelijk voor de productie van Enter.
-Naast bovenstaande verantwoordelijkheden heb je een ondersteunende rol bij de organisatie van organisatiebrede projecten van World Press Photo zoals de wedstrijd en de Awards Days.
De functie-eisen:
-Heeft aantoonbare kennis van en ervaring met de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen binnen ontwikkelingssamenwerking.
-Heeft aantoonbare affiniteit met (foto)journalistiek; ervaring met het maken van producties is een pré.
-Heeft relevante (internationale) werkervaring 1 à 2 jaar.
-Beheerst Engels; een tweede vreemde taal is een pré.
Tevens is de ideale kandidaat resultaatgericht, zelfstandig, flexibel, representatief en beschikt hij/zij over goede sociale en communicatieve vaardigheden evenals een brede algemene ontwikkeling.

Van de projectmanager wordt het volgende verwacht:
-Ondersteuning bij de ontwikkeling van nieuwe projectvoorstellen ten bate van mediaorganisaties en fotojournalisten in het Zuiden.
-Is mede verantwoordelijk voor het organiseren van educatieve projecten en bewaakt daarbij de planning en het budget.
-Ondersteuning bij de inzameling van rapportages van de partners uit het Zuiden.
-Is verantwoordelijk voor de productie van Enter.

Die foto’s van Rineke Dijkstra waarop je vrouwen ziet die net zijn bevallen. Het bloed loopt nog langs hun benen – waarom moet dat allemaal geëtaleerd worden? Vreselijk. Ik hoef het niet te zien.
